UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson was shot and killed in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, 2024. Luigi Mangione was arrested five days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Mangione pleaded guilty to two federal stalking counts on August 14, 2026. He has pleaded not guilty to the New York charges. A defense motion asking the New York court to dismiss counts three through ten is pending. The separate Pennsylvania case arises from the arrest and the items authorities said they recovered there.
