Three courts, one defendant

The three cases

Luigi Mangione is a defendant in three separate prosecutions arising from the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson in Manhattan and the events around his December 9, 2024 arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The federal and New York cases concern the killing; the Pennsylvania case comes from the arrest. Each is set out below with its court and case number.

U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York

The federal case

United States v. Mangione

Case number
1:25-cr-00176
Judge
Margaret M. Garnett

In a January 30, 2026 opinion the court dismissed the two counts that had carried death-penalty eligibility; the government declined to appeal on February 27, 2026, and a June 29, 2026 conference adjourned the trial to January 2027.

Supreme Court of the State of New York, New York County

The New York case

People of the State of New York v. Luigi Mangione

Case number
IND-75657-24/001
Judge
Justice Gregory Carro, Part 32

The September 16, 2025 decision left nine counts, including second-degree murder, after dismissing the two terrorism-linked murder counts; an April 1, 2026 order set the trial to begin September 8, 2026.

Blair County Court of Common Pleas

The Pennsylvania case

Commonwealth v. Mangione

Case number
CP-07-CR-0002724-2024

An October 15, 2025 order paused the case, finding Mangione unavailable to appear while he was held in New York; the charges from the December 9, 2024 arrest stood unchanged.
